Goat - Large - Adult - Male - BarnYard - Teddy
Description
This sweet boy IS NOT for adoption. We just want to spread word about his story in hope for your prayers. See, Teddy was found in March as a stray roaming in the Atlanta area. Teddy had been attacked by dogs and both left legs and his testicles were all severely torn. Due to Fulton County Animal Services' unfamiliarity with goats and their limited budget, they were not able to provide Teddy with treatment to prevent a serious infection in all the affected areas. He was infested with lice and extremely underweight. When no one claimed this sweet boy, Atlanta's Animal Services tried to contact local rescue groups who would take in farm rescues. They had to search all the way to Cleveland, Tennessee. Deanna, one of PALS foster parents, drove down to Atlanta to pick him up before he had to face an uncertain fate. When he was picked him up on April 2nd, he weighed 35 pounds. As of now ( April 29th) he weighs 50 pounds, is lice free, has been wormed, and, as of April 29th, had surgery to remove his left front leg and testicles. It was a risky surgery for him due to the fact that the entire leg, including the shoulder, had to be removed and it is difficult to keep a goat under anesthesia for lengthy periods of time. In addition, there are few effective analgesics to use on goats that are safe for providing pain relief for long periods of time so his recovery from such a radical surgery is still in question. He will have to withstand tremendous pain and shock to his body with pain relief for only the first 24 hours. After that, he will have to adjust to using only three legs. There are still concerns over excessive bleeding andf tearing of the wound as well as possible infection. He was sent home the afternoon of his surgery because it was felt that his foster mom could watch him more closely than the vet's office and was able to provide all of the necessary injections and bandage changes he will need for the next 14 days. At the end of that time his staples will need to be removed and then,God willing, he will be fine. Please keep Teddy in your thoughts and prayers as he is adjusting to major change in his life. If you want to know more about Teddy's recovery, call Deanna at 423-304-6516 or email dbphil@bellsouth.net with subject title "Teddy". Thank you for all your prayers. We will keep you posted on Teddy and get a picture shortly. Again, Teddy is not for adoption. UPDATE: Teddy has recently been introduced to the rest of the goat herd and is doing really well. His three legs hasn't stopped him. He loves getting apple treats and attention from his permanent mother, Deanna. Thanks for all your prayers and concerns!
